Customer real experience with GM Tech 2 Scanner (Review)

Here is the real experience by our customer on GM Tech 2 Scanner.

Bought the highest quality version as i didn’t want to risk any issues with the device, and it all works fine and i do not regret my purchase.

It arrived pretty fast, but i got a customs charge which i didn’t realise i’d get.
First impression: the carry case is not the one shown in the photo’s, which is annoying as the one in the photo’s looks really good, With the cables and candi module stored underneath 2 flaps, the main unit and adaptors clipping in the top of the case etc.

What i got was a basic plastic case (with sharp metal catches) where everything is squashed in on one level in foam, it does the job i guess, but i’d really have prefered the better case i thought i was paying the extra £30 for.
I’d bought a genuine Ugreen rs232 to usb cable in advance, £10 off amazon, this is one of the few cables listed as working with the tech2, and it did, connects at highest speed with no issues at all.

The house power supply has an american plug on it (psu has a universal voltage of 100 to 250 volts)
i got worried when the tech2 wouldn’t even turn on, then i noticed the plug had slightly pulled out of the adaptor i had to use, something we are not used to in england as our plugs fit the sockets very securely and are hard to accidentally pull out, so changing the plug is one of the first things to do…
The house psu runs pretty warm btw.

I did all the self tests and it passed them all with flying colours (except the usual HBCC test that gets ignored (used on some ford vehicles i believe) and the RS485 that has no loopback adaptor so will always fail)
I took it out to my car (a 2011 vauxhall meriva B) and plugged it in, it connected straight away and i asked it to give me a list of DTC’s, i had been using an op-com before i got the Tech2 and the tech2 listed some old DTC’s the op-com had never picked up, I cleared the DTC’s, then tried the rest of the diagnostics available, i had no problems so far, i was able to move engine actuators (op-com can’t do that on the meriva B) operate things remotely, saw the DPF was at 108% full, so went for a little drive and the tech2 showed the DPF regen in progress, got an exhaust temp of 650 degrees C during it)

However that test drive showed up the universal weakness of the clone tech2’s, the internal power supply cuts out when you start the engine so the tech2 re-boots, this means there are a few diagnostic tests you can never do that involve starting the engine whilst the tech2 monitors things (unless you use external power to the tech2, which is advised against in all service manuals)

There is a solution, replace the internal power supply module with a better quality unit!!

There is also a highly recommended modification of removing the RS232 chip and putting a usb module in it’s place so you have a direct USB connection to the Professional Diagnostic Tool tech2, rather than the 4 connections that are just begging to be caught and pulled apart whilst uploading software to the car.

I then tried to SPS to my car to add a new IPC… one of the reasons i bought the Tech2.

That’s when discovered my car is not in the list of cars you use the tech2 to service program directly (the: connect tech2 to car, download data, take tech2 to computer, upload data, download software update, take tech2 back to car and upload the software method)

But i figured i could SPS using the tech2 in the J2534 pass thru mode… only my computer couldn’t connect to the tech2 in that mode… remote view of the unit worked but not SPS… i figured the issue out tho…
The rs232 to usb adapter had been assigned to com port 7 when i plugged it in, i changed the com port to COM1
~windows / computer / device manager / ports (COM & LPT) and find the relevant port your rs232 adapter is on (it wont be listed as ‘Tech2′) and change it to port 1~
Now SPS in pass thru mode works perfectly, i updated the software in a few of the modules (i use GlobalTis 32b, the last offline version with full SPS capability, was released in 2012 i believe, and it had newer software than my 2011 car had in it)

Then i did an update of the BCM and IPC to allow the rain sensor i’d just wired in to be seen by the systems, I tried to add a new immobilizer key, but it refused the accept the new key, most likely the key is at fault.. as part of learning new keys is to delete the old ones from the system, and the tech2 added them back no problem.

I’ve also used the tech2 to connect to ford vehicles using some software called ‘ForScan’ it has the Tech2 listed as a J2534 pass thru devise and works fine with it, The pcmcia card that came with the Tech2 allowed it’s self to be re-written (some people buying from other places find the card is locked and can’t be re-written)
i used GlobalTis’s card writer feature, it takes 40 minutes to write the card, but it works fine.

I’m very pleased with my Tech2 so far, the only thing that would make it perfect would be the carry case that’s shown in the photo’s, but that dosent affect how the actual devise works.

I’d recommend anyone buy their Tech2 from CnAutotool, and i have pointed a few people who were interested in buying one here.

They are different in the price and operating system only!

For a GM garage, you can buy the genuine to use with relief!

For personal use, the price of clone is good and it’s worth the money!

MDI 2 comes with GM software in a HDD that people don’t have to install software themselves and will have no installation issues!

Is it necessary to have a MDI 2 if you have a MDI already?

It depends.

If you are the one pursuit security and efficiency, it’s necessary to have a new MDI2 interface.

The next generation of the J2534 GM Multiple Diagnostic Interface, MDI 2 (Fig. 1, right), offers increased processing power and security than the original MDI (Fig. 1, left) for faster programming speeds on current Global A vehicles as well as future Global B vehicles. The compact communication module is required in order to manage the transfer of data between a vehicle’s onboard network and a service technician’s PC.

Both original and clone MDI 2 are now available in the market.

Both MDI 2 supports diagnostic applications — GDS 2, Data Bus Diagnostic Tool, and Tech2Win — as well as Pass-Thru programming applications — TIS2Web–SPS.

Enhancements to the tool were based on technicians’ feedback on how they use the MDI and how to improve it. It replaces the first generation MDI, introduced in 2007, for Pass-Thru programming on current GM models. The MDI 2 is backward compatible, so it can be used to perform Pass-Thru programming on all vehicles built since 1996.

The MDI 2 connects to the vehicle via the J1962 connector using a new DLC cable. Connection between the MDI 2 and the PC running the Global Diagnostic System 2 (GDS 2) software can be accomplished via standalone (USB), through a new Point-to-Point wireless Wi-Fi interface feature (a simple plug & play), or through the dealership network (Ethernet or wireless).

A DLC Cable Self-Test Loopback Adapter (Fig. 5) was sent to dealerships as an essential tool in December. It’s compatible with the MDI and MDI 2. It’s also sold separately through GM Dealer Equipment.

The adapter is used to test the DLC cable for open wires when used with the MDI Manager software. The adapter also can be used to power the MDI or MDI 2 on the workbench.

New Features

Wi-Fi Connection– The USB Wi-Fi adapter uses a USB dongle that enables Point-to-Point connections without the need for Wi-Fi SSID information or a wireless router.
USB Connection– Uses a new, more secure Type B connector and Ground Offset Failure protection. A wired connection is recommended for longer programming events.
Power Source – The MDI 2 is powered from the vehicle battery via the DLC Cable. It may also be powered over USB to perform firmware updates only using a PC.
Power Backup– Internal batteries that were used in case of a power interruption have been removed, which eliminates the possibility of old batteries corroding over time and damaging the unit. Capacitors maintain power during engine cranking, so operation is maintained.
Firmware Download– Uses USB 2.0 for faster firmware downloads instead of a separate AC power supply.
Future Expansion– Additional USB ports, an SD memory card slot and Function buttons are built into the unit for future enhancements.
Operating Temperature Range– The temperature range has been extended to -20° to 70°C (the MDI range was zero to 50° C).
DLC Cable– The DLC cable is twice as long as the previous cable and connects at the top, making it easier to use. The cable only connects to the MDI 2. A self-test adapter (accessed through the MDI Manager) can be used to test the integrity of the cable.

MDI Manager Software

The MDI Manager must be installed on the PC in order to configure, update and run diagnostic applications targeted for the PC.  Initially, use the MDI Manager software to set up the configuration of the MDI 2. The MDI Manager is also used to update the firmware on the MDI 2. Visit the TIS2Web/GlobalTIS website to determine if a newer version of MDI Manager software is available.

Wireless Dongle Setup

The first time the MDI 2 is used, the point-to-point USB dongle must be paired with the PC, which will install the necessary drivers on the computer. One dongle should be plugged into the PC and one into the MDI 2. (Fig. 7) The dongles are identical. Use either one for either connection. Remove the bottom dust cover to access the port.

TIP: Do not plug the dongle into a USB hub. It must be plugged directly into the computer.

Connect the MDI 2 to the PC via the USB cable. After starting the MDI Manager, the Point-to-Point connection is automatically configured. The USB dongles are intended to stay plugged into the PC or laptop at all time. If it must be removed, safety eject it by right-clicking on the Windows USB icon in the bottom right toolbar on the computer.

Dealerships considering new purchases should look into the MDI 2 for its many new advantages The original MDI will continue to be supported, but will not work on future Global B models.

How do you use Piwis 3 keygen:

This is the method you can try:

Make sure PIWIS 3 is closed. If it is open, right-click the Task bar, and then run Task Manager. Select co.porsche.piwis.shell and End Task.

Click Start (WinKey) and type services. msc in the search box. Run services.msc. If the service is running, then stop it.

If the Keygen is on the laptop, run it, and then leave it open.

Run a Command Prompt.
At the Command Prompt, type:
WMIC BIOS GET SERIAL NUMBER

Enter the Serial Number into the Keygen.
Enter the Country into the Keygen.
Then change the Expiry Date to 01/01/2030.
The Dealer number is not important, but you can enter one if you know it (7 digit number).
Then just leave the Challenge Key blank for now.

Click Start (WinKey) and type services.msc in the search box. Run services.msc
Then change the AdminService startup to Automatic, and click Apply.
Click Start to start the service.

Run Piwis3.
Go to the Imprint section.
Then enter 4 random digits into the Licence key boxes.
Tick the Accept box, and click License Update?—?it will say Not Valid?—?click OK.
Click Licence update twice more and OK.
The Request Key should have disappeared, and the Create Key button should be active?—?click it then.
Place the mouse pointer at the bottom of the screen, and open the Keygen.
And then enter the Request Key into the Challenge Key box, and click Generate.
Enter the license key shown into the boxes on Piwis. Tick the Accept box and then click Licence update.
If successful, you should get a message to reboot. Click OK, and then the computer will shut down.

IMPORTANT!!

After starting the computer, open services.msc again.
Stop AdminService and then set startup to Disabled. You can now run Piwis directly.

You can also get the serial number by printing out the imprint request.
The snag with that is if you are imprinting a VM, it does not show the complete number.

Converting a microPod from wiTECH 2.0 to wiTECH 1.0

Note: The wiTECH MicroPod 2 Application has been deployed to only FCA-franchised dealers in the US and Canada.

As of April 28, 2016, due to new registration requirements, a microPod device will no longer be compatible with wiTECH 1.0 after it is registered with wiTECH 2.0.

Once a device is registered for wiTECH 2.0, it can no longer be converted to be used with wiTECH 1.0 again. We highly recommend assigning a dedicated microPod device to be used with wiTECH 1.0 when needed.
